First OIE scientific conference

30 January 1928 90 years of expertise

The first scientific conference met in Geneva (Switzerland). It consisted of eight experts and laid the foundations for international animal health regulations...

...stating that “only animal health documents issued by nations with properly organised veterinary services can be considered as providing importers with adequate safeguards".

Subsequent conferences refined work on the issuance of health certificates for international trade in animals.

The second conference was held in June 1928, with four new experts, and confirmed the previous resolutions.

The third conference, in 1929, categorised contagious diseases according to severity. It also specified the conditions for issuing certificates for international trade in animals and animal products.

Veterinary certification requirements for trade in live animals and their products can now be found in:

The OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (Chapter 5)

The OIE Aquatic Animal Health Code (Chapter 5)
