The OIE’s presence worldwide: Member Countries, Delegates, national Focal Points and Reference Centres

April Monthly dossier

The work of the OIE is supported by a world network that has grown considerably stronger over the years. The regular expansion of national Focal Points and OIE Reference Centres, the permanent exchange of information and the constant strengthening of the scientific and technical competencies of the members of this network ensure the OIE’s worldwide presence.

For 90 years, the Organisation’s missions have been to:

  • ensure transparency in the global animal disease situation, including animal diseases transmissible to humans,
  • monitor the application of prevention and control methods for these diseases,
  • provide the means to ensure the sanitary safety of world trade in animals and animal products,
  • ensure the sanitary safety of food of animal origin at the primary production stage and promote policies aimed at animal welfare.

To meet all these objectives effectively, the OIE constantly interacts with its 180 Member Countries, each represented by its national Delegate supported by eight national Focal Points, as well as with its network of expertise, the only one of its kind in the world, which comprised 296 Reference Centres spread over all five continents.
